In Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, the number of registered births has decreased significantly, while Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have shown a slight increase.

A total of 711,300 children were born in four countries in the region during the first half of 2026, 5.5 percent fewer than in the same period last year. Turkmenistan was excluded from the calculations due to a lack of comparable statistics.

The largest decline in absolute terms was recorded in Uzbekistan. According to the country’s National Statistics Committee, 373,400 births were registered in January—June, compared with 405,500 a year earlier. The number of births fell by 7.9 percent.

A similar trend was observed in Kazakhstan. According to the Bureau of National Statistics, 149,800 children were born in the country in the first half of 2026, compared with 161,200 a year earlier — a decline of about 7.1 percent.

In Tajikistan, 121,800 babies were born during the period, an increase of 0.9 percent year-on-year.

Kyrgyzstan recorded 66,300 newborns, with the number of births increasing by about 2 percent.
