This base, a modern logistics complex that receives, stores, and then ships cargo to the mine, plays a strategically important role in Kumtor’s high-altitude logistics.
The timely delivery of fuel, equipment, food, spare parts, and other necessary supplies for rotational employees is a key objective for the company’s stable operation. The smooth operation of one of the country’s largest mining facilities depends on a well-established supply chain.
The main goals of the base modernization are to increase throughput, expand fuel and lubricant storage capacity, improve working conditions for employees, and improve the surrounding area. As a result, the base has effectively doubled in size: while previously occupying approximately 7.9 hectares, its area has now reached 15 hectares. The number of fuel and lubricant tanks has increased from 9 to 15. Four more tanks are under construction. They can now store up to 32,400 cubic meters of fuel and lubricants. This «strategic reserve» minimizes the risk of supply disruptions.
At the same time, rail logistics have been optimized. The railway overpass has been expanded: it now accommodates seven tank cars at a time instead of the previous four.
As part of the modernization, 9,000 square meters of asphalt have been laid at the facility, and concrete has begun to be poured on additional 47,000 square meters of land.
Special attention is being paid to safety: new metal fencing has been installed, the fire suppression system has been modernized, the capacity of firewater storage tanks has been increased, and modern foam sprayers and four fire towers have been installed.
All these measures are aimed not only at improving the efficiency of logistics processes but also at ensuring the industrial and environmental safety of the facility.
Statistics from 2025 demonstrate the importance of the facility for the entire Kumtor production chain: 168,547 tons of cargo were transported through the Balykchy transshipment base. Today, the base employs 232 people and operates 141 units of various equipment.
Thanks to the professionalism of its team, the implementation of modern solutions, and the ongoing development of its infrastructure, the Balykchy transshipment base continues to be a reliable logistics hub, ensuring the stable operation of Kumtor mine in challenging climatic and geographical conditions.
