The trade balance is the difference between imports and exports. If the volume of exports exceeds the volume of imported goods, it is considered a positive balance. In the case of Kyrgyzstan, the republic almost always has a negative balance.
The National Statistical Committee always reports Kyrgyzstan’s foreign trade turnover results with a one-month delay.
What influences the decline in exports
Since the beginning of 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan has reintroduced bans on the export of various goods from the country. In particular, scrap metal, waste paper, and livestock.
Looking at export figures for February and March, their decline in April continues (from 13.5 to 17.6 percent).
The situation with trade with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries is slightly better. Trade turnover with EAEU countries in January—April 2026 amounted to $1,790.5 billion, 1.8 percent lower than in the same period in 2025. However, an imbalance is still evident:
Exports to EAEU countries decreased by 11.7 percent (totaling $347.7 million).
Imports increased by 1 percent ($1,442.8 billion).
Mutual trade with EAEU countries accounted for 37.6 percent of the republic’s total trade turnover, 52.3 percent of exports, and 35.2 percent of imports.
Kyrgyzstan’s largest trade partners within the union are Russia (67.4 percent) and Kazakhstan (30.2 percent). Moreover, in April, the share of mutual trade with these countries increased by 0.5 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively.
