The authors of the appeal noted that membership in the UN Security Council is a great responsibility and called on the country’s leadership to move beyond bureaucratic barriers and implement the «from local to global» principle, incorporating the voices of civil society and environmental activists into international processes.
«The development of inclusive early warning systems based on the active participation of local communities, human rights defenders, women leaders, youth, persons with disabilities, environmental activists, and independent experts is of particular importance today,» the organization noted.
Human rights activists emphasized that this mandate is an opportunity to make a strong statement and propose new strategically important initiatives, advance Central Asia’s interests in the peaceful resolution of border disputes and the protection of migrants, conduct water diplomacy, and raise issues related to the development of mountainous regions.
Bir Duino-Kyrgyzstan proposes that the Kyrgyzstan’s authorities:
form a consultative platform under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan with the participation of NGOs, scientists, and activists to discuss Kyrgyzstan’s agenda in the UN Security Council;
develop a national risk prevention mechanism (climate, social, and humanitarian) under the Zhogorku Kenesh and the Ombudsman’s Institute;
promote joint efforts with the Central Asian region and mountainous countries on climate security, protection of mountain ecosystems, water diplomacy, risk and disaster reduction;
ensure regular public consultations and public reporting on Kyrgyzstan’s activities in the UN Security Council;
develop a national action plan to protect human rights defenders and environmental defenders.
Kyrgyzstan was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the first time in its history. The republic will be a member of one of the world organization’s main organs in 2027-2028. The vote took place on June 3 at the UN General Assembly in New York. 142 states voted for the Kyrgyz Republic’s candidacy.
